From Design to Roll-to-Roll Replication: Scalable Manufacturing of Micro- and Nanostructured Optical Components


Abstract:
The MATERIALS Institute of JOANNEUM RESEARCH Forschungsgesellschaft mbH provides partial or complete concepts for the design, simulation, optimisation, and prototyping of optical components and systems for customised lighting applications. This presentation introduces the underlying process chain using a specific application example. The workflow covers the design and validation of optical structures using advanced simulation tools, the fabrication of embossing masters by laser lithography, subsequent upscaling using a step-and-repeat approach, and the large-area replication of the structures by roll-to-roll UV nanoimprint lithography (UV-NIL). In addition, two ongoing research projects focusing on the further development of advanced mastering technologies will be presented. These projects provide an outlook on current research activities and emerging approaches for the fabrication and scalable replication of optical micro- and nanostructures.

Dr. Markus Postl

Markus Postl studied technical physics at the TU Graz. After his studies, he worked from 2009 to 2016 as a scientist at the NanoTecCenter Weiz, where he mainly worked on high- and low-temperature sensor technology and process optimisation in the field of photolithography, PVD, thin-film processing and inkjet printing for organic solar cells, LEDs and field-effect transistors. Since 2016, he has been working at MATERIALS, the Institute for Sensors, Photonics and Manufacturing Technologies of JOANNEUM RESEARCH Forschungsgesellschaft mbH in Weiz, Austria. He is part of Dr Barbara Stadlober's team, where he has worked on EU- and nationally funded projects and is currently the project coordinator of the EU-funded OPTIMAL project. He has been working in the field of laser lithography for over ten years, and his current research focuses on greyscale single- and multi-photon laser lithography on large areas.
